Yes, dogs can eat cauliflower. It isn't toxic and is fine raw or cooked, as long as it's prepared without salt, butter, sauce or seasoning. At around 25 kcal per 100 g it's low in calories, but in larger amounts it causes wind, because it's high in fibre. Cut it into small pieces and leave out the stalk and leaves. How the calculator works
- Daily requirement: Resting energy requirement 70 × 15 kg^0.75 ≈ 534 kcal × factor 1.6 ≈ 855 kcal.
- Treat allowance: at most 10% of that = 86 kcal for all treats combined.
- Calorie limit: 86 kcal ÷ 25 kcal/100 g = 344 g of cauliflower.
- Guide value for dogs 10–25 kg: 3 × cauliflower piece (approx. 1.3 cm) at 1.5 g each = 5 g (guide value from the source).
- Recommendation: the smaller of the two, rounded down to half portions → 3 × 1.5 g = 4 g ≈ 1 kcal.

Here the guide value for dogs 10–25 kg sets the limit (guide value from the source): at most 3 × cauliflower piece (approx. 1.3 cm). In terms of calories, up to 344 g would be possible.
Based on PetMD (vet-reviewed): 1–2 pieces of approx. 1.3 cm up to 9 kg, up to 3 at 10–14 kg, 5–6 at 14–23 kg, a handful from 23 kg. Here: 2, 3 and 6, i.e. below a handful. Grams per piece estimated.
This applies if it's the only snack that day – if your dog gets other treats too, give correspondingly less.

What's in it
- Low in calories: raw, around 25 kcal and 0.3 g of fat per 100 g.
- Provides fibre (2 g per 100 g), vitamin C and potassium; PetMD also mentions vitamin K, vitamin B6 and folate.
- PetMD calls it a good snack for dogs that need to lose weight, with veterinary supervision.
- Can be given raw or steamed; a few small pieces can be sprinkled over your dog's usual food.
What to watch out for
- Large amounts cause wind and stomach upsets, because cauliflower is high in fibre.
- Fibre and sugars that aren't digested are fermented by bacteria in the gut. This produces gas, and the tummy becomes bloated.
- Large pieces, the stalk and the leaves can cause choking or an intestinal blockage.
- According to PetMD, cauliflower prepared with salt or butter isn't toxic, but it is unhealthy. A high-fat meal can trigger pancreatitis in some cases.
- Garlic and onions, which are often cooked with it, are toxic to dogs and can damage red blood cells.
- Cheese sauce, béchamel or cauliflower cheese contain dairy products. These can cause diarrhoea, because dogs largely lack lactase.
- Fried or breaded cauliflower isn't suitable: it's greasy and often salted, and too much salt can cause vomiting and diarrhoea – in severe cases, tremors and seizures.
- Freshly cooked cauliflower is hot; let it cool so your dog doesn't burn its mouth.

- Cauliflower prepared with garlic, onions, salt or spices
- The stalk, the leaves or large pieces

Frequently asked questions about cauliflower
Can dogs eat cooked cauliflower?
Yes, if it's cooked completely plain, without salt or butter. Steaming is the easiest way. Let it cool so your dog doesn't burn its mouth. Cauliflower cooked with garlic or onions is toxic to dogs.
Can dogs eat raw cauliflower?
Yes. PetMD lists cauliflower among the vegetables dogs can also eat raw. Wash it and cut the florets into small pieces of just over 1 cm so your dog doesn't choke.
Can my dog eat cauliflower stalks?
Better leave them out. PetMD advises removing stems, stalks and leaves from vegetables, as they can cause choking or an intestinal blockage. Even the florets should only be given cut into small pieces.
Can dogs eat cauliflower leaves?
Better not. According to PetMD, you should remove the leaves beforehand as well, so they don't get stuck in the throat or gut. Only give your dog the florets, in small pieces.
Can dogs eat cauliflower with sauce, cheese or butter?
No. Dogs don't tolerate the cheese, cream and milk in cheese sauce, béchamel or bakes well, and a lot of fat, such as from butter or hollandaise, can trigger pancreatitis. On top of that, sauces can contain salt, onions or garlic – and onions and garlic are toxic to dogs.
Can dogs eat fried or breaded cauliflower?
No. Fried, deep-fried or breaded cauliflower isn't suitable, because it's greasy and often salted or seasoned. A lot of fat can trigger pancreatitis, and too much salt is dangerous for dogs: it can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Only give raw or plain steamed cauliflower.
Can puppies eat cauliflower?
It's better to wait. Puppies have more sensitive digestion than adult dogs, and Chewy writes that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli could do them more harm than good. Cauliflower is also a cruciferous vegetable. If in doubt, ask your vet.
Can dogs eat broccoli and cauliflower?
Yes, both in small, unseasoned pieces. However, the AKC names broccoli and cauliflower as vegetables that cause wind in larger amounts. If you give both, split the amount rather than giving the full guide amount of each.
How many calories are in cauliflower?
Raw, around 25 kcal per 100 g. According to the USDA, one floret weighs about 13 g and has just over 3 kcal. The snack limit for a 10 kg dog with normal needs is around 63 kcal a day; with cauliflower, it's digestion rather than calories that sets the limit. Your dog's daily needs are worked out at doggomeal.de/en/kalorienbedarf-hund-rechner.
Why does cauliflower give my dog wind?
Cauliflower is high in fibre. Together with sugars that aren't digested, it's fermented by bacteria in the gut, and this produces gas. If severe wind comes on suddenly, or diarrhoea, abdominal pain or blood in the stool appear as well, your dog needs to see the vet.
Can my dog eat cauliflower every day?
PetMD doesn't give a fixed routine: treats like cauliflower should make up no more than 10% of the diet, and you should keep an eye on how often you give it. If it gives your dog wind, give it less often.
Is cauliflower good for overweight dogs?
As a replacement for higher-calorie treats, yes. Because it has so few calories, PetMD calls cauliflower a good snack for dogs that need to lose weight. Still, agree the weight-loss plan with your vet.
Can a dog with kidney disease eat cauliflower?
Only after checking with your vet. According to VCA, there are special kidney diets with less phosphorus, sodium and protein for dogs with chronic kidney disease. If your dog is on a prescription diet from the vet, PetMD says nothing should be given outside that diet – not even treats.
