How much to feed a Chihuahua: small amounts, carefully planned

An adult, neutered Chihuahua weighing 2.5 kg needs about 225 kcal a day with normal exercise – that is only about 65 g of dry food or 225 g of wet food. A 1.5 kg dog gets by on about 150 kcal (40 g of dry food), a Chihuahua at 3.5 kg on around 285 kcal (80 g). With such small amounts, just 10 g more dry food a day is about 16 per cent too much.

How the figure is calculated

Resting energy requirement 70 × 2.5 kg^0.75 ≈ 139 kcal × factor 1.6 ≈ 225 kcal per day.

225 kcal ÷ 360 kcal per 100 g (typical dry food) × 100 ≈ 65 g.

  • A starting point – check the weight every 1–2 weeks and adjust the amount in small steps. Treats count too.

How it is calculated: Calm = factor 1.4, Normal = 1.6 (neutered, 1–2 hours of walks), Active = 2.0. Entire (unneutered) dogs with normal exercise come out about 12 per cent higher (factor 1.8).

Example for 2.5 kg: resting energy requirement 70 × 2.5 kg^0.75 ≈ 139 kcal × factor 1.6 = 225 kcal a day, divided by 360 kcal per 100 g = 65 g of dry food. If your pack states a different value, enter it in the calculator above.

Small dog, high requirement per kilo

Per kilogram, Chihuahuas need much more energy than large dogs, because the resting requirement does not rise linearly with weight (70 × weight to the power of 0.75). A 2.5 kg Chihuahua is at about 90 kcal per kilo, a 30 kg Labrador at just under 48. That is why rules of thumb such as “2 per cent of body weight” work poorly for toy dogs: 2 per cent here would be 50 g of wet food – not even a quarter of the 225 g needed.

The FCI standard specifies 1 to 3 kg, ideally 1.5 to 2.5 kg. In a large British veterinary study of Chihuahuas, however, the average weight of adult dogs was 3.4 kg, and excess weight was among the most common diagnoses at 5.9 per cent. Many Chihuahuas are larger than the standard; that is not a problem as long as the body shape is right. Calculate with the weight your dog has at a good body shape.

Teeth and chews

Gum and periodontal disease was the most common diagnosis in Chihuahuas in the same study (13.5 per cent), and retained baby teeth occurred in 5.7 per cent. For feeding, this means regular dental checks, tooth brushing and chews only in a suitable size – with their calories counted. A 30 kcal chew strip is already a good eighth of a daily requirement of 225 kcal.

  • Weigh the food to the gram, ideally with kitchen scales.
  • Cut treats into tiny pieces or take individual pieces of kibble from the daily ration.
  • Choose small kibble that your dog can chew easily.

Chihuahua puppies: avoiding low blood sugar

Very young and very small puppies have few fat and muscle reserves and an immature liver. They can slip into low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) between meals, especially when they are cold, stressed or play a lot. According to the chief veterinarian of the American Kennel Club, this mainly affects newly adopted toy-breed puppies under twelve weeks.

So: four small meals a day until about three months, then three; do not let a meal be skipped after the move, keep puppies warm and have them dewormed. According to the calculation, a 1.5 kg puppy under four months needs about 285 kcal a day – almost twice as much as an adult dog of the same weight. Warning signs are severe lethargy, trembling, a wobbly gait, later seizures or loss of consciousness. This is an emergency.

The puppy feeding calculator works out the exact amount by age and current weight.

FAQ

Common questions about feeding your Chihuahua

How much food does a Chihuahua need per day?

A neutered 2.5 kg Chihuahua with normal exercise needs about 225 kcal a day: roughly 65 g of dry food or 225 g of wet food. Because the amounts are so small, you should weigh the food to the gram.

How much should a Chihuahua weigh?

The FCI standard gives 1 to 3 kg, ideally 1.5 to 2.5 kg. Many Chihuahuas are heavier – in a British study the average was 3.4 kg. For the food amount, what counts is the weight at a good body shape.

How many times a day should a Chihuahua puppy eat?

Four times a day until about three months, then three times a day until growth is complete, and twice a day for adult dogs. With toy breeds in particular, puppies should not skip a meal, because they are prone to low blood sugar.

How do I recognise low blood sugar in a Chihuahua puppy?

Typical signs are severe lethargy, trembling, weakness and an unsteady gait, later seizures or loss of consciousness. This is an emergency: go to the vet immediately.

Why doesn't the 2 per cent rule work for a Chihuahua?

Energy requirements do not rise in proportion to weight. Small dogs need considerably more per kilo: a 2.5 kg Chihuahua is at about 90 kcal per kilo and needs roughly 225 g of wet food a day – 2 per cent of its weight would be only 50 g.
