Cheese biscuits for dogs with Parmesan

A little Parmesan is enough to make the whole dough smell of cheese. Long-matured hard cheese is low in lactose but salty and high in fat – so only 30 g goes into around 40 biscuits.

How to bake Parmesan biscuits

  1. Preheat the oven to 170 °C conventional (150 °C fan) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Briefly grind the rolled oats finely in a blender. They also work unground; the biscuits will just be more rustic.
  3. Knead with the Parmesan, egg and water into a mouldable dough and leave to soak for 10 minutes.
  4. Shape the dough into two logs about 3 cm in diameter and cut them into slices around 1 cm thick.
  5. Bake on the tray for 20–25 minutes until the edges brown lightly.
  6. Leave them to dry for 30 minutes in the switched-off oven and let them cool.

  • If your dog gets other treats or chews that day, give fewer biscuits accordingly.
  • Reduce the daily ration by these 57 kcal – that's about 16 g of dry food.

How the number is worked out

Resting energy requirement 70 × 10 kg^0.75 ≈ 394 kcal × factor 1.6 ≈ 630 kcal a day. No more than 10% of that for treats = 63 kcal. 63 kcal ÷ 19 kcal per biscuit = 3.3 → rounded down to 3 biscuits.

The 10% rule comes from the WSAVA's guidance on treats.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many Parmesan biscuits can my dog have a day?

One biscuit has about 19 kcal. Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. That means a neutered, normally active dog weighing 5 kg can have about 2 biscuits a day, a 10 kg dog about 3 biscuits and a 25 kg dog about 6 biscuits – with the main meal made correspondingly smaller. The biscuit calculator on this page works it out for your dog.

Can dogs eat Parmesan?

In small amounts, yes. Long-matured hard cheese contains hardly any lactose, but plenty of salt and fat. Each of these biscuits contains less than 1 g of Parmesan – not a problem for healthy dogs.

Can I use a different cheese?

Well-matured mountain cheese or aged Gouda work too, also finely grated and used sparingly. Blue cheese, cheese with herbs or garlic, and processed cheese are not suitable.

Are the biscuits suitable for dogs with lactose intolerance?

Usually yes, because matured hard cheese contains hardly any lactose. With an allergy to milk protein, however, they are not – bake the banana or tuna biscuits instead.
