Banana dog biscuits with just 3 ingredients

Ripe banana, rolled oats, an egg – that's the whole recipe. The banana binds the dough and makes it slightly sweet, without any sugar. Ideal for a first attempt at baking and for dogs that don't need meat in their biscuits.

How to bake banana biscuits

  1. Preheat the oven to 170 °C conventional (150 °C fan) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Mash the banana finely with a fork in a bowl until there are hardly any lumps left.
  3. Stir in the egg, then the rolled oats. Leave to soak for 10 minutes – the dough firms up as it stands.
  4. Use two teaspoons to place small mounds (about 8 g each) on the tray and flatten them slightly.
  5. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the edges are golden brown.
  6. Leave them to dry for 30 minutes in the switched-off oven with the door slightly open, then let them cool.

  • If your dog gets other treats or chews that day, give fewer biscuits accordingly.
  • Reduce the daily ration by these 56 kcal – that's about 16 g of dry food.

How the number is worked out

Resting energy requirement 70 × 10 kg^0.75 ≈ 394 kcal × factor 1.6 ≈ 630 kcal a day. No more than 10% of that for treats = 63 kcal. 63 kcal ÷ 19 kcal per biscuit = 3.4 → rounded down to 3 biscuits.

The 10% rule comes from the WSAVA's guidance on treats.

Storage · about 1 week in the fridge

The banana keeps the biscuits soft inside. So store them in a container in the fridge or freeze them (for up to about 3 months). If you want to keep them in a biscuit tin for longer, dry them for another 1–2 hours at 80 °C after baking.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many banana biscuits can my dog have a day?

One biscuit has about 19 kcal. Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. That means a neutered, normally active dog weighing 5 kg can have about 2 biscuits a day, a 10 kg dog about 3 biscuits and a 25 kg dog about 6 biscuits – with the main meal made correspondingly smaller. The biscuit calculator on this page works it out for your dog.

Can I replace the rolled oats with flour?

Yes. Use about 120 g of wholemeal flour instead of the rolled oats and add a splash of water if needed. The dough can then be rolled out and cut into shapes. Each biscuit has slightly fewer kcal.

Why are my banana biscuits still soft inside?

Banana brings a lot of moisture with it. Make the biscuits smaller and flatter and leave them to dry for longer in the switched-off oven. Soft biscuits aren't bad, but they belong in the fridge.

Is banana healthy for dogs?

In small amounts, yes: it provides potassium and fibre, but it also contains a lot of fruit sugar. Each of these biscuits contains only about 3 g of banana – as a snack, that's not a problem.
