Peanut butter dog biscuits without xylitol
Almost all dogs love peanut butter. For these biscuits, though, only pure peanut butter will do: 100% peanuts, without sugar, salt, palm oil and above all without xylitol. Then 60 g is enough to give 45 biscuits a lovely nutty flavour.

How to bake peanut butter biscuits
- Preheat the oven to 170 °C conventional (150 °C fan) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Stir the peanut butter and egg until smooth. If the peanut butter is very firm, stand the jar in warm water for a moment.
- Knead in the flour and water alternately until the dough is no longer sticky.
- Roll the dough out about 5 mm thick and cut out bones, hearts or circles (approx. 3.5 cm). Knead the scraps together and roll them out again.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until the biscuits are firm and lightly browned.
- Leave them to cool completely on the tray – only then do they turn crunchy.

How many peanut butter biscuits your dog can have a day
Enter weight, age and exercise – the number of biscuits updates instantly.
- If your dog gets other treats or chews that day, give fewer biscuits accordingly.
- Reduce the daily ration by these 62 kcal – that's about 17 g of dry food.
How the number is worked out
Resting energy requirement 70 × 10 kg^0.75 ≈ 394 kcal × factor 1.6 ≈ 630 kcal a day. No more than 10% of that for treats = 63 kcal. 63 kcal ÷ 21 kcal per biscuit = 3.1 → rounded down to 3 biscuits.
The 10% rule comes from the WSAVA's guidance on treats.

Important for this recipe
- Xylitol (birch sugar, E 967) is life-threatening for dogs even in small amounts: it can cause a severe drop in blood sugar and liver damage. The only thing on the peanut butter's ingredients list should be “peanuts”.
- Peanut butter is very high in energy (around 600 kcal per 100 g) – don't use more than the recipe says.
- Always off-limits: sugar, salt, xylitol, chocolate, raisins, onion, garlic, macadamia nuts and nutmeg – see all the basic rules.
Frequently asked questions
How many peanut butter biscuits can my dog have a day?
One biscuit has about 21 kcal. Treats should make up no more than 10% of daily calories. That means a neutered, normally active dog weighing 5 kg can have about 1 biscuit a day, a 10 kg dog about 3 biscuits and a 25 kg dog about 6 biscuits – with the main meal made correspondingly smaller. The biscuit calculator on this page works it out for your dog.
Which peanut butter can dogs eat?
Only peanut butter made from 100% peanuts. Ordinary peanut butter often contains sugar, salt and palm oil, and some reduced-sugar kinds even contain xylitol (birch sugar, E 967) – which is toxic to dogs. If the ingredients list shows anything other than peanuts, the jar stays in the cupboard.
What should I do if my dog has eaten xylitol?
Call your vet or the emergency vet straight away and don't wait to see whether symptoms appear. Weakness, trembling or vomiting can start within an hour.
Can I use rolled oats instead of flour?
Yes, 150 g of fine rolled oats instead of the flour – then you shape small rounds instead of cutting out. Each biscuit then has slightly more kcal, because rolled oats are higher in energy than wholemeal flour.
