Method
Step 1: Prepare
- Preheat your oven to 175 °C (fan).
- Lightly grease a 12-hole mini muffin tin or use silicone moulds.
- Finely grate the apple and carrot.
Tip: Always remove the apple seeds completely – they contain traces of cyanide.
Step 2: Make the batter
- Stir the egg and the grated apple and carrot together in a mixing bowl.
- Add the oat flour and mix thoroughly.
- Let the batter rest for 5–10 minutes so the oat flour can soak up the moisture from the apple and carrot.
Step 3: Fill the moulds
- Divide the batter evenly between the 12 mini moulds.
Tip: An ice cream scoop makes all the muffins the same size, so they bake evenly.
Step 4: Bake
- Bake the mini muffins on the middle shelf for 22–28 minutes until golden brown.
- From minute 22, do the skewer test: push a wooden skewer into the centre of the largest muffin.
- If it comes out clean, the muffins are done. If moist crumbs are still clinging to it, give them another 2–4 minutes.
Tip: When the muffins are cooked through, the top springs back when you press it lightly with a finger. Carrot and banana muffins stay slightly moist inside – that’s intended.
Step 5: Leave to cool
- Leave the muffins to cool completely on a wire rack before you do anything else with them or put them in a closed container.
Tip: If you close the container while they are still warm, condensation forms – and that encourages mould.
Step 6: Store
- At room temperature in a ceramic or metal tin (not completely airtight): 5–7 days.
- In the fridge in a food storage container: 7–10 days.
- In the freezer, in portions in freezer bags: 2–3 months.
Tip: Because the carrot and apple bring a lot of moisture, we recommend freezing them in portions – just take them out in good time the evening before.
How much of it can your dog have? That depends on their size – you'll find the recommendation with the recipe in the DoggoMeal app. As a rule of thumb, snacks should make up no more than about 10% of the daily ration.
